A packed hall at 4.45pm on the press day of the Geneva Motor Show signalled another busy unveiling for MINI as the wraps came off the Cooper Diesel and One models. In addition, MINI used the show to confirm the use of the name Clubman for its new ‘Shooting Brake’ model, due to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with a UK on-sale date expected before the end of 2007.The One and Cooper Diesel go on sale in the UK on 14 April, priced at £11,595 and £14,190 respectively. Also hitting showrooms from April are the Sidewalk special edition convertibles, available in One, Cooper and Cooper S spec. Prices are £16,910 for the One, £17,960 for the Cooper and £20,235 for the Cooper S.

One
The 1.4-litre engine beneath the bonnet of the base model is a direct relative of the 1.6-litre that powers the 120bhp Cooper and 175bhp Cooper S. It also features the same Valvetronic technology found in the Cooper – full variable valve control for smooth power delivery and more efficient running. The cylinder block and bearing case are made from aluminium alloy. Both the volume flow-controlled oil pump and coolant pump operate only when required – ie, when the engine is up to operating temperature.Peak power is up from the previous generation One by 5bhp to 95bhp with 140Nm of torque. Average fuel consumption is claimed to be 49.6mpg – a 15 per cent improvement over the old model. Acceleration is not too shabby for a compact engine, with 62mph coming up in 10.9 seconds from standstill, then on to a maximum speed of 115mph.A six-speed manual gearbox is standard but there is also the option of a six-speed auto complete with Steptronic (manual selection) facility.

Cooper D
The 1.6-litre turbo diesel model boasts a healthy 110bhp and upto 260Nm of torque (using the overboost facility, increasing pulling power by 20Nm). Acceleration is pretty impressive, too – 0-62mph happens "Chatting to... Dr Kay Segler""Chatting to... Andy Hearn"in 9.9 seconds with a top speed 121mph. Average fuel consumption is a claimed 64.2mpg.The lightweight aluminium power plant features common rail technology with precision, electronic control of the fuel injection process. There’s a standard particulate trap to reduce sooty emissions.The Cooper D distinguishes itself from its petrol counterpart with a more pronounced bonnet bulge and a colour-keyed central vane in the lower grille.
